Folding Utility Knife

A utility knife is one of those things that most trades people will have on them at all times, or accessible within a few minutes. They are handy for all sorts of things, whether it is cutting up boxes to dispose of them, cutting the tops of silicon tubes off, opening packaging or anything else; they are great little tools to have around. One of the major problems with these is that some have a tendency to allow the blades to slide out when you don’t want them to. The result is that when you go to pick it up the sharp blade can cut you, which is a feeling that you never want to experience. Just thinking about it sends shivers down my spine! The Safety Cutter was then thought up, and now knives are much better.

As a result, the Folding Utility Knife came around. You can get ones which slide as well, but the folding ones are very nifty. Basically the knife folds in half when you have retracted the blade, and the knife shuts the blade on top of itself, meaning it’s impossible to cut yourself until you have re opened the knife. On top of this, the knife that you have is now twice as small in length, allowing you to put it in smaller places. This is a handy option when your tool bag is already packed to the maximum. Alternatively you can get a Retractable Stanley Knife, but these are just as good.

A Folding Utility Knife is also good as they can usually hold spare blades without allowing them to get in the road. I use a sliding utility knife which locks away the blade but the folding ones are just as good. When looking to get a utility knife you want to find something that is strong and is going to last you a lifetime. There is nothing worse than getting sucked into buying the cheapest on the shelf only to find that it doesn’t even last a week! Have a look at the design of the Folding Utility Knife, and consider whether it is going to hold up. Those that are made of steel or aluminum are a good start as they are immediately stronger than the plastic ones. Look for the parts that move and how well designed they are.

In the case of a folding utility knife the components are going to get moved back and forth regularly each time that you open and close the knife, so are they going to last. Things that are small and weak will often break or perish, rendering the knife useless. When buying the blades for your Folding Utility Knife you want to get a set of blade circular. These are curved blades which are able to cut twice as well as your standard blades.

The difference is in the cutting edge; the curved blades have a distinct curve and the flat blade is just the standard Stanley knife blades. You will find that the curved blades make a huge difference in what you cut for the sole reason that the tip is much sharper. You do have to be careful of them breaking off, but they are great blades. Combine these with a good quality folding utility knife and you will have something that lasts for a long time!
